Submission formats

Each submission requires a title of up to 100 characters (including spaces), an abstract of 100–250 words, and an extended summary of 600–1000 words (including references). According to the SIG27 focus, all submissions must clearly and explicitly deal with online measures of learning processes (i.e., measures of learning as it happens, as opposed to measures before or after learning episodes). Up to three images or tables can be uploaded along with your submission. Proposals can only be submitted through the EARLI platform. Detailed instructions can be found in the submission guideliness.

Submission guidelines

Paper 0

Single paper

Single paper presentations can be used to showcase finished empirical work (i.e., they must contain data), including results. Theoretical works are more suitable for the "no or not-so-perfect data" format, and work in progress is more suitable for the poster format.

Single paper sessions are scheduled for 90 min and include up to four presentations. Presentations have a maximum of 15 min plus 5 min for discussion, for a maximum of 20 min. At the end of all presentations there is an open, general discussion of at least 10 min.

Poster

Poster

Posters give the opportunity to present and discuss research plans and work in progress interactively. Poster sessions are scheduled for 90 min, which start with a short presentation (about 5 min per poster) given to an audience gathered as a group. After the authors’ brief presentations, in-depth discussions with the audience are facilitated through an exhibition-style format, where audience members freely discuss further details with the presenter(s) of their choosing. The poster sessions offer researchers the chance to present their work in a visual format and offer more opportunities for interaction and discussion. Materials for fixing posters on the walls or poster boards will be provided.

Symposium

Symposium

Symposia provide an opportunity to present research on one topic, often from multiple perspectives, compiling a coherent set of papers for discussion. Symposia sessions are directed by a chair and involve three presenters and one discussant, from at least three different countries. The submission consists of three single papers plus an additional abstract that explains the overarching goal of the symposium and the discussion involved. Reviewers will be required to judge the symposium as a whole as well as individual contributions. If the quality and/or the coherence of the symposium as a whole are insufficient, the symposium may be split into single papers and/or posters, based on the ranking of individual contributions.

Symposia sessions are scheduled for 90 min structured as: 15 min presentation + 5 min questions for each of the three papers, a 15-min presentation by the discussant, and a 15-min general discussion involving the presenters, the discussant, and the audience.

Roundtable

No- or not-so-perfect-data

This is a beloved format by the SIG27 community that puts the spotlight on challenging theoretical, methodological, and practical issues related to the very essence of our SIG, measuring learning as it happens. No- or not-so-perfect-data presentations allow researchers to share struggles they have faced or are facing, often related to, but not limited to, data collection experiences, technological issues with sensors or measuring devices, selection of the most appropriate measure or device, noisy recordings, artifacts, insufficient sample size, ethical considerations, lack of standardized methodological procedures, and finding the right theoretical framework. No- or not-so-perfect-data discussions are at the beating heart of our community and an important driver to advance research on learning and instruction by leveraging online measures of learning processes. No- or not-so-perfect-data are scheduled in sessions of 90 min equally divided among 3–4 presentations.

Workshop

Tutorial

Our SIG27 has a strongly methodological character. There are a variety of tools, devices, methods, and data types used in our community. Tutorials are meant for researchers experienced in collecting, processing, and analyzing different types of data, or using different SIG27-relevant methods, to share their expertise with the community. The goal is to lower the entry barrier for other researchers to become familiar with those methods, which they could then incorporate to their research, if relevant. Tutorials enable the sharing and spreading of invaluable know-how in our community, thereby diversifying and strengthening our methodological approaches. Each tutorial is meant to cover a full 90 min session including interactivity and hands-on exercises. For tutorials, it is crucial that the learning objectives are clear, concrete, and of practical value.

The conference takes place at the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC), part of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and will be hosted at the CSIC Residència d’Investigadors, located in the heart of Barcelona (Carrer Hospital, 64 – 08001 Barcelona).

IIIA-CSIC is one of Spain’s leading research centers in artificial intelligence. The institute conducts internationally recognised research in areas such as multi-agent systems, machine learning, automated reasoning, agreement technologies, and AI applications in education and society. As part of CSIC, Spain’s largest public research institution, IIIA combines fundamental research with socially impactful innovation, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across AI application fields, including education and digital transformation.

The CSIC Residència d’Investigadors, in the historic Raval district, provides a central and vibrant setting for the conference. Located within walking distance of Plaça Catalunya and easily accessible from Barcelona Airport via public transport, the venue offers convenient access to accommodation, restaurants, cultural landmarks, and public transportation within Zone 1 of the Barcelona metropolitan area.

Barcelona is an international center for research, education, entrepreneurship, and technological innovation. On the cultural side, you can enjoy the city from the Gothic Quarter and modernist landmarks such as the Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló to contemporary research institutions and innovation hubs. Barcelona blends centuries of cultural heritage with cutting-edge scientific development. Catalan and Spanish are both official languages in Catalonia, and Catalan is widely used in public life, education, and local institutions.

We look forward to welcoming you to IIIA-CSIC and to Barcelona for the EARLI SIG 27. Benvingudes i benvinguts!
